Copacabana is beach and neigbhourhood in the southern area of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Copacabana shares a 4,5 km beach coastline with Leme beach and neighbourhood.
Copacabana neighbours Leme, Ipanema, and Botafogo areas. Copacabana beach neighbours Leme beach towards the beginning of it´s coasline (sharing the coastline), Ipanema beach towards the end (new coastline after Arpoador area), and Botafogo onto back.
ORIGIN OF THE NAME COPACABANA:
The name Copacabana arises from an XVII century image of Our Virgin Lady of Copacabana, brought by the portuguese from Lake Titicaca, Bolivia.
The image of Our Virgin Lady of Copacabana, was brought by portuguese settlers to Rio de Janeiro, and was installed in a chapel located in the spot where the Forte de Copacabana fortress, is now placed (at the end of Copacabana beach).

Copacabana is a 4,5 km long beach, with white sands and a blue ocean, wide open and frontward to the Atlantic Ocean.
Copacabana is the most popular beach in Rio de Janeiro, and perhaps in the entire world. The visitor will find cariocas and tourists sunbathing at all hours at Copacabana beach, Rio de Janeiro.
Copacabana beach coastline starts at Leme Rock (at Leme beach). Leme´s Rock is a circular rock formation that looks like a helm when seen from above. At Leme Stone the visitor will find a very nice sightseeng spot of the entire coastline of Copacabana beach, the fishermen´s pathway, and a cute gastronomic area.
The Copacabana beach coastline ends at the Copacabana fortress, and Arpoador area (Arpoador beach, stone, and park). After these spots (all set at the vertix where Copacabana beach ends) a new 4,5 km coastline beggins: The Ipanema and Leblon beach coastline.
Along the 4,5 km strip of sand of Copacabana beach, Rio de Janeiro, you can choose the best place for sunbathing and swimming. You can also enjoy the many activities going on at Copacabana beach itself: Volleyball, footvolleyball, palette, palette tennis, and beach football (also called beach soccer) are played al along Copacabana beach, with courts set up very professionally, right on the sand, specially towards the middle of the beach, due to the huge amont of space available.
At summer time you will even get to see some sports international championships at Copacabana beach, Rio de Janeiro.

NEW YEAR´S EVE CELEBRATION AT COPACABANA BEACH BRAZIL:
Copacabana beach is home to Rio de Janeiro´s famous New Year's celebration (in portuguese called Reveillon). It attracts over 2 million people from all over the world, that gather at Copacabana beach for new year´s countdown!
The celebration of new year´s eve at Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro, starts early on. People start gathering early on in the afternoon, very often dressed in white and bringing with them offerings for Yemanjá, the goddess of the seas. The visitor will see various religious celebrations along the beach.
Following a local tradition, at new year´s eve at Copacabana beach, people dress in white offering white flowers and other gifts to Orixa Yemanjá, the goddess of the seas.
Recitals and concerts start early, at 8 pm, building up the climax for the exiting 10 second countdown, and the latter amazing fireworks show, that lasts up to 20 minutes.
The fireworks show is really something to see. Tons of fireworks are set off from 3 ships, anchored right infront of Copacabana beach. The show is spectacular.
And thats not all, beacause at half past midnightht it´s scheduled the main show of the evening, better said, the main show of the new year at Copacabana beach. And after that you still have some more concerts up to 2 am.
