Area: The Guanabara Bay has a total area of 380 km2, and its perimeter extends itself along several municipalities of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Cities: The two biggest cities in the surroundings of the Guanabara Bay, Brazil, are Rio de Janeiro and Niteroi, and they are located one in front of the other at one of the narrowest points of the Bay.
Length and width: The Guanabara Bay is 31 km (19 miles) long and 28 km (18 miles) wide at its maximum. At it´s smallest width (1,6 km, approximately one mile) it´s mouth is flanked at the southern tip by the São João fortress, Rio de Janeiro, (at Urca Hill besides the Sugar Loaf Mountain), and at the northern tip by the Santa Cruz fortress in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro.
Depth: The average depth of the Guanabara Bay is 3 meters, summing up to a depth of 8,3 meters at the Río de Janeiro - Niterói bridge area, and to a maximun depth of 18 meters at the entrance of Rio de Janeiro's Port.
